PVC Pipe Cutting Tips

Cutting is easy to do when you follow these techniques.

Cut the longest pieces first
Mark length to be cut with a pencil
Cut with a standard PVC pipe cutter. (I use the simple "ratcheting" style cutter available at most hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.)
Line up pencil mark with the pipe cutter blade, then cut on the mark

Alternative suggestion:

Cut the pipe with a hack saw
To make sure your cut is straight, place PVC pipe into a wood or plastic miter box. Then set a piece of scrap wood between the pipe and miter box to brace the pipe securely.
Remove any burrs with a file

Why do you need a cutting jig? Consider...

You'll save lots of time
If you're going to do a lot of cutting, it's easier on your hands
It's perfect for multiple cuts of the same pipe length
Measure once, cut as many pieces as you want (ideal for home production)
You'll get the same exact cut every time

Just think... if you need, say, ten pieces of 12-inch pipe, all you do is measure the first length, lay it onto the jig and cut 'em all lickety-split with your miter saw!

You can assemble your jig for practically nothing. (I made mine with scrap lumber, a couple of nuts & bolts and a handful of screws.) It only takes a couple of hours. Maybe less.
